International Harvester 1486

Another older restoration, as I am trying to get more of our restorations up for viewing

In 2006 we restored a 1979 International 1486, SN 20,932. This tractor’s resided in Whitehall New York and was going to continue to be used on the family farm.

This was the first cab interior that we had replaced and it was quite the job. All the interior electrical was disconnected so the liner could be slide out the back thru air filter outlet. While the liner was out, the electrical was repaired as needed, heater and AC seals were replaced, and a radio, 6 disc CD Changer with Speakers were installed. The rear quarter window glass was replaced, new console seals, door latch and the interior were manufactured by Fehr Cab in Fairbury, Illinois.

The tractor had been well maintained so very little repair work was required. We did change all fluids & filters.

The cab sheet metal was toughly pressure washed before it was brought into the paint room where everything was sanded, repaired as needed, primed and the exterior of the cab was painted with International White Blanc

NOTE: Dakota Shine, or a similar product was applied to this tractor at some time and caused real havoc with sanding. It just balled up on the sandpaper, so we had to figure out how to get it off before we could proceed. We ended up using an oven cleaner product on the sheet metal, then we were able to continue sanding.

The sheet metal is always primed and allowed to cure, as it will shrink, before it can be painted.

Back in 2006 you could not just go and purchase a set of Vinyl Die Cut Decals online. All these decals were purchased individually from International and they were quite expensive. This antique International 1486 turned out to be a beautiful tractor and I am sure is still being used today.
